And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. - Exodus 3:6 (ESV)
It truly must have been terrifying for Moses to encounter the presence of the Almighty in such a powerful and surreal experience. This was a moment that would fundamentally redirect the rest of his life, and completely redefine his identity and purpose. This event changed everything for Moses. And it began with Moses receiving orders to complete a task that was not only impossible by human standards, but radically collided with the past life he was desperately trying to escape and forget. Surely this fact only added to his fear. However, the Father reassured Moses.
He said, "But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain." - Exodus 3:12 (ESV)
This has always struck me as an interesting way for the Father to guarantee in advance that Moses would actually accomplish this seemingly impossible task. The Father’s promise itself is foreshadowing Mose’s success. It's fascinating when we can look back on certain events in our lives and recognize after the fact how the Father was clearly orchestrating things all along. I feel like Moses was simply told that in advance. The Father was basically telling him, “Don’t worry, I’m going to be the one doing all of this, and you'll realize that when we end up right back here in this same spot!”
As a way to allude to this prophetic foreshadowing, the background of the painting includes the enormous “Rock at Horeb” from which Moses miraculously provided water to the wandering Israelites twice during their time in the wilderness. This is an important detail because Exodus 3:1 opens by recording that Moses was indeed in the region of Horeb.
Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. - Exodus 3:1 (ESV)
So the enormous 60’ rock stands as a witness of the Father’s promise and a landmark to which Moses will indeed return. However, the rock is not yet split. Those events have not yet transpired. But when the scriptures do eventually describe them, I find it particularly beautiful that it first begins with confirmation that the Father is indeed with Moses, just like He promised.
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. - Exodus 17:6 (ESV)
Most people who have been walking by faith for long enough have likely had their own burning bush like experiences in which the Father makes Himself undeniably known in strange and powerful ways. Perhaps you’ve even been given a commission by Him that seems unachievable from your perspective. The events of Moses’s life stand as a potent reminder for all believers that it’s not about OUR perspective. It matters not what WE think is possible. In fact, the only thing that does matter is whether or not we are willing to listen and obey.
And if we do decide to set out and face down our own personal Pharoah’s, it’s critical to remember that the Father will always be right there with us as well. And more than likely, we will one day look back at the landmarks of our own past and realize that the Father had promised we would arrive before we even realized we were going to leave.
