The Comforter (John 14:26)
The Comforter (John 14:26), Mixed Media on Canvas Board, 2012 ~SOLD~
This is the last in a subseries of "portraits" of the various lines that appear in my Joyflow paintings. These images, which each feature a single line, are intended to act as a sort of legend for the Jowflow paintings; showcasing some of the attributes that have been personified into the symbolic lines.
The bright magenta line always represents the Holy Spirit. The red-violet color is, to me, very nurturing. This is important because the Holy Spirit is the guide through the struggles of everyday life. The Holy Spirit is the one whispering encouragement and truth in our ear, reminding us we are dearly loved by God. The Holy Spirit is who daily feeds our soul and replenishes our hope. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13)
The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that our bodies are a “temple of the Holy Spirit” who lives within us. As such, I was thinking very “biologically” about the background for this painting. I wanted it to be filled with something suggestive of all the marvelous complexity that God has created in us, the Bible describes us as “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) The cool blues and violets seem an appropriate color to denote our souls, where the Holy Spirit resides. And there are a few touches of gold as well to acknowledge us as temples of Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit line is visually unique as it moves about the page with a great deal of energy. The line needs to be nimble so that it can easily move about in the trenches of everyday life, encouraging and convicting us as necessary in our walk with Christ. This is just as the key verse describes in John 14:26, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
