Everlasting (Psalm 90:2)
Everlasting (Psalm 90:1-2), 11 1/2" x 36", Acrylic, Modeling Paste, Colored Pencil, Tissue Paper on Masonite, 2012
The unchanging, ever-present nature of God is the overriding theme of this painting. The Bible teaches us that God is without beginning; he has always existed. He is outside of the constraints of time, as we understand it, because He is the inventor of time. God remains as the sole creator of everything, both vast and miniscule, seen and unseen, and his divine presence is as tangible today as it was before he began the act of creation. And the most important aspect of God’s character is his unending love for us.
Everything God does is an expression of that love for us and of his desire for us to return to Him. And that love, like God Himself, maintains an unrelenting presence in our lives; and if we are willing to acknowledge it and accept it, our lives will never be the same. We will be transformed, made new, and welcomed into an eternal relationship with the author of life.
He is the God of forever, the one who was, and is, and is to come. This painting depicts this idea using the same symbolic set of lines I’ve established in previous Joyflow works to denote the triune nature of God. (Yellow=God, Green=Yeshua, Magenta=Holy Spirit). Here their presence remains throughout the span of time depicted in the background. The dark left side suggests the beginning when “the earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:2). The sunrise and the night time sky allude to the predictability of the natural systems which God has established and also how what God has created is evidence of his existence. “The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2). The brightness on the right side suggests the eternal reward in Heaven we face when we place our faith in Yeshua. The lines stretch across the entire image without beginning or end and fill the composition with an undeniable presence, just like God fills our world. Psalm 90:1-2 sums this all up beautifully, “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting thou art God.”
