"A Place Prepared (John 14:1-3)"
This painting is part of my new Promises series, which includes artworks based upon promises made by God in the Bible that are meant to give us hope and encouragement as believers.
The inspiration for this mixed media painting comes from John 14:1-3, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
This composition is a spinoff of the gelatin prints I made entitled, "My Father's House." The painting is an abstract interpretation of the new Heaven and new Earth promised to us in both the Old and New Testaments (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1) To incorporate this idea into the painting, pages from the Bible have actually been collaged as the foundation for all of the buildings. In fact, most of the passages used feature verses that discuss Heaven or the Kingdom of God. Even though a majority of the writing has been painted over leaving only traces of the text, the buildings are, as a result, literally made from the words of God.
In addition, the tallest building in the composition has bricks that have been drawn at the bottom by scratching into a layer of modeling paste. The cornerstone of the building has been adorned with an Alpha and Omega symbol as a reference to Yeshua. (Revelation 1:8, Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 28:16) The sky is also illuminated with a vibrant yellow, a color I frequently use to symbolically represent God. Here the yellow is symbolic too, as it suggests the glory of God providing the light for Heaven instead of the sun. (Revelation 21:23)
Obviously Heaven will be so much greater than anything our earthly minds can presently imagine. So in trying to represent Heaven, I decided to create something that seemed recognizably familiar and yet strange and otherworldly. I’ve tried to create something that seems both new and ancient at the same time. A city glowing with light and warmth that is simultaneously majestic and humble, just like our Savior. Heaven will be a literal, physical place with actual, honest-to-goodness buildings and cities that we inhabit, but I did not want to go for a literal representation. I wanted to instead create something that will direct our thoughts towards Heaven and the invaluable promises about it in the Bible.
