This canvas is the fifth painting in my Joyflow series, which is a body of work exploring aspects of the Christian faith through compositions that are essentially nonobjective. I understand that this is a bit of a stretch, however, it is worth noting that these paintings are infused with a great deal of personal symbolism and are an expression of the joy I have in living a life with Christ. There is a system of symbolism in all these paintings that continues with this canvas in which the yellow line represents God, the green line suggests Yeshua, and the thin magenta line denotes the Holy Spirit. The inspiration for this particular painting comes from 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” I was interested in capturing that transformation and how in influences the remainder of our lives. The dirty, jagged line writhing across the bottom of the canvas represents a person consumed by sin and the brokenness of this world. It is painted with an impasto of browns, greens and reds. As this human line passes through an intersection of the three lines of the Trinity there is a flash of light and it emerges smooth and clean and begins to follow the path of the of the other lines just as our lives become aligned with Christ. The Holy Spirit line first makes its appearance at this moment of transformation and remains intricately entwined with the human line as it makes its way across the canvas.
