Saul's Conversion

Picture
Saul's Conversion, Linoleum Block Print, 9" x 12", 2014
This linoleum block print is based on the historical account of the conversion of Saul from the ninth chapter of the book of Acts.  Saul whom was "breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord" (v. 1) was traveling on the road to Damascus.  The Damascus Gate, in fact, can be seen in the background of the painting.  His intentions were to gather up any followers of Christ and have them sent to prison back in Jerusalem.  You can see the letters from the high priest in his bag which were essentially warrants to gather up followers of The Way.  On his way, however, Saul is confronted by the risen Savior when “suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven" (v.3)  Saul falls to the ground and is rebuked by Jesus for persecuting Him and His believers.  In that moment Saul fell to the ground and realized everything he believed was wrong; everything he had based his life on was false.

I relate easily to the story of Saul.  In fact, I believe we all have, or will eventually have, our moment in the spotlight when we finally are faced with the undeniable truth that Jesus is Lord and our lives are worth nothing without Him.  This is sometimes a painful process, as it was for Saul who was struck blind for three days following this encounter.  It is also a deeply personal experience, which is why I chose to not include the men traveling with Saul in the composition.  I wanted to showcase the intimate encounter between Saul and Jesus.  I'm quite confident that in that instant, when confronted by the God of Universe, Saul was acutely unaware of anything else.

Of course, the most important aspect of Saul's story, and our own, is how we respond to Jesus once we finally recognize his authority.  Saul obeys his instructions and begins a new life complete with a new name.  As Paul, he goes on to become one of the biggest champions of the gospel, spreading the Good News through countless countries and leading thousands to salvation.  In the book of Romans, Paul challenges all of us to "present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service " (12:1)
