Sin
This side is about man's fallen nature and the inevitability of sin. The subject is painted with only hands to signify the conscious action of sin by humans. Hands are depicted engaged in various sins against each other and God. One hand is shown stealing coins from the pocket of another. Hands are painted committing acts of violence and murder. A drunken hand sloshes a goblet of wine, while another cheats by setting a counterweight on a false scale. One hand is seen holding up high a false idol (an ancient image of Baal) while several others worship the idol and offer it incense. Along the right edge, two lines twist about, one eventually penetrating the other. These two represent adultery and prostitution as the hand of one line bears a wedding ring as it places a coin into the palm of the other. The God line and the Holy Spirit line are only seen briefly in the background of this composition. This implies that in the act of sinning, man is placing himself before God. Twelve stars, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, are also placed in the surrounding night sky suggesting that no one is free from the burden of sin.
