Unity (Ephesians 4:4-6)
Unity 1 (Ephesians 4:4-6), Mixed Media on Wood Panel, 10" 14", 2012 ~SOLD~
Completed as part of an annual art lock-in we do at the high school where I teach, this painting references another verse that fits beautifully with my ideas in the Joyflow series. While many of the artworks from the Joyflow series are filled with numerous lines, I'm also fascinated with the image of a bold, solitary line. I enjoy the singularity of one image carrying the weight, depth, and mystery of the triune nature of God. One God, three persons. Ephesians 4:4-6 imbues that idea and more into a poetic repetition of one, "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all who is above all, and through all, and in you all" (KJV). There is a potency to all of these aspects of faith being wrapped up into one line and I tried to hint at these various topics through the use of different materials (rubber pads, paper towels, tissue paper, drywall tape, etc) and multiple edges within the one line.
Since these images are abstractions, there is no literal reference to any of these qualities, but there is an attempt to create a line with distinct textures and characteristics coming together to form one line. In this way it suggest the three-in-one nature of the triune God. It is my hope that there is a presence to these pieces that evokes reflection and praise for our Lord and Creator.
